2020 sees the return of 29th February… will any ladies out there be making the most of the extra day?
Every 4 years we get the strange phenomena that is a leap year. At the end of February an extra day is added to our calendars, equating the year to 366 days. It is on this date that traditionally women have been encouraged to propose to men.
Where did this tradition originate?
It is thought to date back to the 5th Century when St. Brigid of Kildare, an Irish nun, complained to St Patrick that women were having to wait too long for their suitors to pop the question. The legend goes that St Patrick subsequently decreed that women could propose once every 4 years, on a leap year.
Is this an outdated concept?
Nowadays it is generally accepted that women or men can propose to their partner on any day they like, however, if you’re a traditionalist then you may welcome the idea of reserving this special day for getting down on one knee.
